14-02-17 Russian Olivier salad 900x600

Hosting an Olympic party in your home can be a fun way to spice up your winter while enjoying the thrill of Olympic competition. The following includes some food and drink ideas to make your Olympic party a memorable one.

Traditional Food

Pickles, salami and dark bread are Russian favorites that can be quickly put together on an appetizer plate. Add some pickled herring and you’ll have a Russian feast. Olivier salad is a classic Russian dish that is similar to egg or potato salad. The following recipe can be used for sandwiches or as a dip with crackers:

4 medium potatoes (cooked), 4 boiled eggs, 8 ounces chopped kosher dill pickles, 1 small chopped onion, 4 slices of thick sliced bologna, 1 cup of mayo, and salt to taste.

Finely chop all the meat and vegetables, add the mayo and salt, and mix well. It should be chilled for about an hour before serving. There are many variations on this dish. Items such as sour apples, peas and even carrots are often added.

For dessert, support the home team by dipping large strawberries into white chocolate and then dipping the very tips into blue sprinkles. The layered red, white, and blue look will be a hit with both adults and kids.

Delicious Drinks

The White Russian is a classic Russian drink and can be made with or without alcohol. It traditionally includes lots of ice, vodka, Kahlua, and cream or milk. For a family event, the White Russian can be made using the following ingredients:  Start by filling a glass at least halfway full of ice. Then add a shot of coffee flavored syrup, followed by two shots of half and half or cream. Add a half shot of chocolate colored syrup for a touch of color. Mix well and serve immediately. A few drops of vanilla extract can be used for flavoring.

Sbiten is another classic Russian drink that is usually served warm and everyone in the family will enjoy it. The ingredients include 1 cup honey, 24 ounces seedless blackberry jam, 5 cinnamon sticks, 1 Tablespoon cloves, half a teaspoon of nutmeg and 14 cups of water.

Combine all the ingredients over medium heat. Let the mixture simmer while covered for about 30 minutes. Strain the mixture through a sieve before serving warm.
